In spite of the innumerable horrors and ugliness, at the the end of this book I was left with a sense of beauty. A Thousand Splendid Suns merupakan karya dari penulis asal Afghanistan-Amerika, Khaled Hosseini. The ending of ATSS was one of the most successful I've read. A good ending pulls the threads together and leaves a vivid picture in our minds. We so often comment on the beginnings of novels but endings are also so important. Hosseini deals with various social issues as well as political ones, the subjugation and ill-treatment of women being one of the foremost. While missiles fly and friends, relatives and homes are literally blown to pieces, the protagonists struggle to survive. And of other interesting characters, all affected by the never-ending wars. It is also the story of the man to whom they are both married, cruel and selfish Rasheed. Set in war-ravaged Afghanistan, the novel tells the story of Mariam, who is pleasant-looking and a harami( bastard) and Laila, who is beautiful, lively and intelligent. I found A Thousand Splendid Suns a powerful and deeply moving novel.
